Two Core Trainee psychiatrists at BCHFT are celebrating after achieving exceptional results in their exams.

Dr Sheridan McWilliam and Dr Chidimma Onoh both passed their exam of Clinical Assessment of Skills and Competencies (CASC), alongside passing all 16 clinical scenarios of the exam.

Only 5% of people who sit the exam pass all 16 stations, highlighting their remarkable achievement.

It is the final exam that psychiatrists need to pass before entering higher training and their success has been praised by colleagues who have supported their training journey.

Andrew Griffiths, a consultant psychiatrist and CASC examiner paid tribute to Dr McWilliam and Dr Onoh’s success.

He said: “In May of this year Dr Chidimma Onoh, and in September, Dr Sheridan McWilliam both passed all 16 clinical scenarios of the exam. This is a phenomenal achievement in that only 5% of people who sit the exam manage to accomplish this.

“We are also very proud of this year's cohort of doctors, Core Trainees, Clinical Fellows and Middle Grades who have shown amazing dedication and hard work in their preparation for the exam. Throughout this time, they have applied themselves consistently as true professionals showing the qualities that we want of future psychiatrists. They regularly attended a weekly preparation group in their own time as well as receiving ongoing help from their trainers and supervisors.

“Whilst not everybody was successful, we will continue to support them as they continue to work hard for the next exam. I am sure all colleagues will wish them the best in both their ongoing preparations and performance in the January 2024 exam.”

Dr McWilliam and Dr Onoh are now putting their hard work into practice with the perinatal team at Dorothy Pattison Hospital.
