A host of new dates are now available for people with dementia and their carers to enjoy the power of music at the Shine A Light choir.

The singing group, which is supported by Black Country Brighter Lives, the charitable arm of Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, is a place for people to meet others, have fun and enjoy the therapeutic effects of music and singing.

The Shine A Light choir launched in 2023 and is funded entirely by donations to the Trust charity which supports projects to boost the wellbeing of patients, families, communities and carers across the Black Country.

It is backed by clinicians and health professionals who are also on hand during the sessions, giving carers a chance to find out more about support that is on offer locally for people living with dementia.

Now running for a third time, more people are encouraged to come along and feel the benefits of the choir, which is completely free to attend.

Choir leader Sarah Jones brings with her a wealth of experience following 25 years as a community choir leader. She has led the group from the start, becoming a familiar face to the participants.

Sarah said: “Uniting together to sing creates not only fellowship and a sense of community, but it has physical and psychological benefits for everyone. The breathing, posture and vocalising exercises required for singing provides a great wellbeing boost.

“Music, and its connection to our past and community, is uplifting and can have a calming effect for people living with dementia. I have seen the effect it has made on people who have previously taken part in the Shine A Light choir and I look forward to sharing this with more people this autumn.”

Manisha Patel, charity engagement officer for Black Country Brighter Lives, who has been instrumental in fundraising for the choir, said: “It is wonderful to see how the Shine A Light choir has developed and grown into a community. I would like to thank all the donors who have helped make the project a reality and Sarah for her brilliant choir leadership. I can’t wait to welcome more people to the Shine a Light choir this September.”

The Shine A Light choir returns on Monday 22nd September and will take place every Monday until 20th October, culminating in a special performance for participants to celebrate their time with the group.

It is open to anyone living with dementia and their families or carers. It is free to attend, and no experience is necessary. It takes place at YMCA Western Gateway, 38 Carters Green, West Bromwich, B70 9LG.
