A grateful daughter has raised hundreds of pounds for a mental health hospital ward in Wolverhampton as a thank you to staff who cared for her mum.

Kelly Dean took on a 10k run in September to raise money for the Meadow Ward at Penn Hospital, to mark her gratitude to staff at the ward who cared for her mum, Sally Davies, who was treated at the hospital last year.

The hospital, based on Penn Road, is run by Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and provides inpatient care for people who need more support than they can receive in the community, with Meadow Ward specialising in caring for older adults.

Speaking on the impact the care from the team made on her mum, Kelly said: “It brought her back from a point where we didn’t recognise her. Mentally and physically, she was very ill. She was like a different person when she came out. We were so grateful to all the staff at Meadow Ward for giving us our mother back.”

It was a feat for Kelly, who took on the Stafford 10k run with a friend, having not taken on a running challenge in three years.

She kept her mind on the cause as she clocked up the kilometres, managing to smash her fundraising target of £250. She was supported every step of the way by her three siblings and her mum’s husband Anthony.

Kelly, who is from Stafford, added: “With every 1km I knew how much I was raising and that helped to get me through.”

Kelly returned to the ward with Sally on 10 December to present the cheque to the ward team, having raised £485.

She wishes for the money to be spent on creative activities and gardening equipment for patients on the ward, inspired by how much her mum enjoyed the garden at Meadow Ward which helped her therapeutically.

Laura Power, ward manager at Meadow Ward said: “All of the team at Meadow Ward really appreciate Kelly’s dedication to fundraise for our ward and we are so pleased that Sally is doing well. The money Kelly has raised will help fund activities for patients, making a real difference to their time on the ward.”
