The Therapy and Liaison Community Service (TALCS) works with people over the age of 65 who are currently experiencing mental health problems and are within secondary mental health services. The service provides time-limited therapeutic interventions on a 1:1 and group basis. We complete an initial assessment and offer interventions which may include the following based on the persons needs: compassion focused therapy, EMDR, CBT approaches, solution focused approaches and anxiety management.
The service also works with people of any age with a diagnosis of dementia. We provide time-limited therapeutic interventions on a 1:1 and group basis. The service delivers interventions including CST, ICST, life story work and an initial diagnosis group ‘seeing past dementia’.
Liaison work within both pathways:
We work with community, third sector and charitable agencies within the Walsall area to co-facilitate therapeutic groups. We also provide training and support to staff within these areas to enable older adults to remain supported within the community.
TALCS facilitates peer support groups for older adults and people with dementia to assist wellbeing within the community and provide supported recovery.
- Referrals will be received from the memory assessment service for dementia related interventions.
- For Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) only following diagnosis of dementia – GPs and the Personal Assistants: Dementia can refer directly to the service.
- Referrals will be received from secondary care services following a mental health assessment and risk assessment. Referrals can be made by mental health nurses, occupational therapists and medical colleagues.
- Requests from the voluntary or third sector will be accepted with regard to non-patient specific training requests (e.g. training on cognitive stimulation therapy).
Referrals are made via TALCS referral forms either for dementia or our functional pathway, and should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
